The Smart Traveler

FlorenceWith the decline of the dollar against the Euro you might think it's not a very good time to visit Europe. Al contrario il mio amico! Luxury properties throughout the European Union are clamoring for Americans with many offering big discounts for U.S. citizens. We are planning our spring vacation of ten fabulous days in Venice, Florence and Tuscany.

We picked that destination because there is a non-stop flight from Philly to Venice. Leave PHL at 5:55pm and arrive at Venice Marco Polo airport (VCE) at 8:30 the next day. There are numerous general information Web sites such as www.Europeforvisitors.com that will give you a good feel for the destination. Also be sure to check out the "official" Web sites at www.italiantourism.com and www.italiantravelpromotioncouncil.org. They will supply you with maps, books and connections to hotels and tour operators.

Within Italy, there are numerous three, four and five star hotels with rooms in the $250.00 to $400.00 per night range and up. For a look at how the rich and famous live, go to www.slh.com and visit Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

Ca'Sagredo in Venice is both a 5-star luxury hotel and a museum.

Our plans include a stopover in Florence before our drive through Tuscany. For Florence info, go to www.explore-florence.com or www.iexplore.com/cityguides/Italy/Florence/.

Tuscany is in the historic heart of Italy. The famous cities of the region beckon the traveler. Siena, Pisa, and Florence are surrounded by medieval walled villages and acres of vineyards. Chianti Classico is the drink of the region and we intend to sample as much of the local product as our limited time will allow.

Be sure to check the fall issue of Connections when we will cover our Discover Europe: Italy Series. We will provide information about hotels, restaurants, wineries and historic sites in this region. Ciao!
